material dramaturgy

A workshop introducing key concepts & experiential learning for working with materials in a performance context.

Texts for student reading on working with materials, material agency and material meaning: Jane Bennet’s Vibrant Matter, Robin Wall-Kimmerer’s Gathering Moss, and The Theatre of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio.

Workshop structure: the students each bring a material and we run through some embodied work to connect with that material and notice its properties, before making short scenographic performances alone and in groups. As the workshop progresses we add light, sound, scale and the students determine the audience viewing position.
